Entrepreneurs Who Know Seniors Well Know This: Solve Their Problem

Lead with a “clear and compelling… unifying focal point” says Jim Collins in his epic book, Built to Last.

Many entrepreneurs make the mistake of inventing something that fixes a problem, their problem.  That’s all well and good if you intend to end world hunger or stop the inexorable slide into climate catastrophe.  Generally, young founders are not choosing to pursue a big hairy audacious goal or BHAG.  That’s a Jim Collins tip for success.

I was born in 1950 and have become an entrepreneur.  So, at 72, I am pursuing a big, hairy, audacious goal: meeting seniors where they are - in their need of nutritious and conveniently prepared meals.  It’s also where I am.   Like many young company founders, I, too, have decided to fix a “me-problem.”  In this case, my BHAG  also addresses the  food insecurity reported by 36% of the senior population in our country.

We created Healthrageous because we think it’s outrageous just how hard it can be to get and stay healthy. As I scan the competitive landscape for convenient, healthy nutrition for Seniors, I see too much input from software engineers.  Too much over-engineering.  Providing Three  Squares a day doesn’t have to involve the best and the brightest graduates of Cal Poly or MIT.  In our golden years, we are simply not that difficult to please.

Here are some tips the folks at Healthrageous have internalized – even our younger staff:

  1. We don’t want to get fatter… so strike empty calories off the list.
  2. We  prefer convenience over insisting that we be highly disciplined in our consumption habits.
  3. Convenience also means friction-free interaction with our health plan’s Mother Ship.  No downloading apps, un-navigable portals, or 2-factor authentication for us.
  4. If you intend to nag us into compliance,  take us off your list of “members,”. We don’t want to be in your sadistic club, which generally makes us feel inadequate for falling off the wagon.
  5. Shopping, reading labels or pamphlets/white papers.  Nope, I can’t find my reading glasses.  Besides, my favorite show on TV is just about to start.
  6. Food prep and clean-up?  Didn’t I tell you my show was about to start? And finally…
  7. Price.  Free is  better.

So, you see.  Being an entrepreneur who wants to make meal time less costly and stressful can be quite easy, if you rely on a focus group of old farts like me.
